Winner of Champ Singles, Josephine with RU mary Conroy

04/02/12 - Three one-lifers and one two-lifer contested the second day of the Women's Champ Singles played in sunny conditions today. In round one, Mary Conroy won over Bev Murdoch while Josephine Connolly beat Kath Steiner in a close finish. In the second round, Mary took a life from Josephine, who then turned the tables on her in the second final, again in a very tight game. A great standard of bowls and a pleasure to watch.

29/01/12 - The Selectors have just announced the Junior Rep sides and Omanu talent is well represented. 21/01/12 - The singles finals were successfully played out on Saturday in ideal weather on a well-paced, true Eves green. As well, the Women's veteran Singles was played on Thursday. These conditions helped contribute to the playing of some truly marvellous bowls.

The match between Larry Pepper and Graham Caie, in particular, was a fantastic match played over 28 hotly contested ends full of marvellous shots and counter shots. Graham Caie was the eventual winner. Charles Pettit, who beat Graham Caie in the final, turns 80 in 11 days and had already won the Pairs Champs this season. Like a good wine! Very well done, Pat on your fourth successive title, you too, John, for your second.

BoP Centre Women's Champ Pairs

08/01/12 - It has not been a Christmas to remember for our long-standing members Walter and Shirley Riddell. On a family visit to Tasmania, Shirley had a fall resulting in a dislocated shoulder. On their return to New Zealand their problems were compounded when their car was involved in an accident while crossing the Kaimais. Walter (lucky fellow) escaped with only scratches but Shirley suffered a crushed vertibrae. After a spell in hospital she is now recovering at home. In the true club spirit of Omanu. our Ladies Club Captain, Kath Steiner, has been around helping with the housework. Well done Kath! Hope you have a speedy recovery, Shirley.

04/12/11 - Omanu played hosts this weekend to the BoP Centre Women's two-bowl Triples. Thirty six teams participated including two Omanu teams, twelve of them at Matua. Heavy rain on Saturday forced a reduction from four to three games causing an increase in qualifiers to 19, which included our two teams. Four post-section games were played on Sunday eliminating all but the two finalist teams. The Mt Maunganui team skipped by Raewym Willis proved too strong for Sue Taylor of Matua.

A number of our members played in the Men's event with three og them making the cut-off. Two of them skipped by Colin Wood and Graham Caie progressed to the last eight with Colin unlucky not to proceed further.

23/11/11 - Ten teams of drawn mixed triples took part in the Minchen Trophy. A good day for bowls, not too hot - not too cold - not much wind & no rain. There was only one four-winner followed by three three-winners. Outright winner of the Minchen Trophy was the team of Colin Wood, John Wheeler & Pat Andrews, the second team Jim Pratt, June Gerrard & Bill Peters. Everyone enjoyed their days bowls.

06/11/11 - The 'Top Seven' teams had mixed fortunes over the weekend. Playing in the Premier B Division, the Men's team was very successful in winning their section. Out of the five games played the Pairs and Singles lost only one game each. The Fours team went one better losing only one point in a drawn game. The top two teams of each section will play a round robin to decide the champion in two weeks time. The Women reported as follows;

The Women's Premier B team playing in three disciplines, Singles, Pairs and Fours, have this weekend played five rounds of very competitive bowls. Omanu were fourth with 15 points while Matua were outright winners with 19 and Arawa second with 17.

Conditions proved challenging on both days. The wind blew at Gate Pa and temperatures were cold in Rotorua. The teams shared equally the highs and lows of the competition, thank you to you all for your time and great effort. Special thanks go to the very dedicated Manager June Gerrard. The time and support she gave over the two days was very much appreciated by the team. The ladies also wished to thank President Tom Clarke for spending time with the team in support.

26/10/11 - The Selectors have announced their 'Top Seven' teams for the Interclub to take place on the weekends of 5/6 and 19/20 November. The teams are;
Women's Team
Fours; Lynlie Edwards, Margaret Bromell, Pauline Bailey, Sue Pepper.
Pairs; Bev White, Mary Conroy.
Singles; Josephine Connolly.
Reserves; June Gerrard (Manager), Bev Murdoch.
Men's Team
Fours; Gary Andrews, John Jennings, Colin Wood, Garth Murdoch.
Pairs; Lance Orsler, Ron Parton.
Singles; Graham Caie.
Reserves; Winston Davey (Manager).

Colin Wood, Mary Conroy, David Thompson and Gail Wood

25/10/11 - The final round robin game of the Mixed Champ Fours, rained off a month ago, was played today. The two teams with three wins and leading the event again had victories ensuring they kept their positions. With both teams having four wins from five, the winners were Colin Wood, Mary Conroy, David Thompson & Gail Wood from Bev White, Stuart Pemberton, Dale Maxwell & Colleen Houghton.

24/10/11 - The Mens Centre Fours, the Francis Cup, was held this Labour Weekend. Headquarters was at Tauraga South and a total of 30 teams entered, five teams from Omanu. Only one Omanu team qualified and progressed to the last eight. The team was skipped by Ted Barker with Colin Wood, Dean Manson & Ray Bailey.
For two threes and two twos, didn't they do well!

Lynlie Edwards and Pat Couchman, Champ Pairs

23/10/11 - Saturday saw a small field for the Champ Women's Pairs reduced to three teams, one two-lifer and two one-lifers. On day two, the first to have the bye were Bev Murdoch and Kath Steiner while Sue Pepper and Pat Adrews, last years Champions, took on the two-lifers, Lynlie Edwards and Pat Couchman. In both games Lynlie and Pat proved too strong for their opposition and came home winners.
Well done Lynlie and Pat, better than all those runners-up last year!

BoP Centre Women's Champ Pairs

20/10/11 - The quality of our greens persuaded BoP Centre to request them as Headquarters for the Ocean Shores Village sponsored Women's Champ Fours held over four days this week. 34 teams entered the event using two Omanu greens and one at Matua. The weather conditions were difficult, sometimes cold and showery, other days bright and sunny. There were two Omanu entries, teams skipped by Marion Caie and Lynlie Edwards. Both 'almost' qualified winning three games from six.

Winning skip, Sue Taylor, enloying a finger food lunch with the runners-up

Thirteen teams from Taupo, Kawerau, Rotorua and Tauranga qualified for post section commencing on Wednesday morning. The first round reduced the field to eight and after round two the four teams remaining were skipped by Wendy Green, Taupo playing Sue Taylor from Matua, and G Savage, Kawerau playing Marie Brown from Mt Maunganui. Taylor and Brown were the succesful skips. The final was held on Thursday morning and for the most part was a very even contest. One disasterous end when they dropped a seven was the undoing of the Mount team and the Matua team skipped by Sue Taylor was the deserved winner.

Charles Pettit and Garth Murdoch new Pairs Champions

16/10/11 - After Saturday's round the field for the Men's Champ Pairs was reduced to four teams, two one-lifers and two two-lifers. Round one saw Jim Whitelock and Ray Bailey eliminated while Charles Pettit and Garth Murdoch took a life from Graham Caie and Winston Davey. Due to the vagaries of the automatic two-life system, Pettit and Caie had to play again with Caie winning, while it was now the turn of Gary Andrews and Jim Pratt to have the bye.

Round three and with three one-lifers left, Caie took the bye while Pettit took on and defeated Andrews. In the final, for the third time today, Pettit and Caie faced up to each other. With one victory each it was again the turn of Charles and Garth to win and take our the championship.

08/10/11 - Both of Omanu's Women's Saturday Interclub sides were in action today. The A Division team, playing two-bowl triples, had a two wins and two losses but by winning the aggregate came out on top against Gate Pa. The B Division side (playing three-bowl triples) had similar results, each team that comprised the side had a win and loss, the aggregate again going Omanu's way.

Play was of a high standard in both divisions, with very pleasing results. Well done to all. There are still more games to be played on 29th October, 17th December, 14th January & 18th February.

06/10/11 - On a day that was perfect for bowling, only four entries were received for the Womens Handicap Singles. The event was played as a round robin with three games of 21 ends. All the games were very close with some very good bowling from everyone. The winner was Pauline Bailey with Pat Andrews coming second, Kath Steiner & Gail Wood came 3rd & 4th respectively.

18/09/11 - The Bay of Plenty Junior Reps played Gisborne/East Coast at Ohope today. The squad was graced with two Omanu players, Pat Andrews and Bronwyn McMahon.

Conditions were mostly good but the last game had to be shortened when the weather closed in. In the tightest of tight results the Bay triumphed though both sides scored an equal number of wins/draws. With a zero differential, the Bay won by virtue of having less shots scored against them.
Well Done.

15/09/11 - Our Womens Open Triples tournament, sponsored by the Tauranga Motor Company was held today. Both greens were used with 20 teams playing. One game was played before time for a quick drink followed by a leisurely lunch. Omanu bowlers once again did themselves proud with their cooking skills.

Many of the bowlers stayed on for two games in the afternoon, followed by afternoon tea. It was a most enjoyable day with everyone looking forward to the new bowling season. The clubrooms look very smart painted in the new colours.

10/08/11 - Our last Open Optional Triples Tournament of the Winter season was held today. There was full green of 16 teams and the day was beautiful, fine and sunny, with the greens running superbly. The outright winning team came from the Mount, the only team with four wins skipped by Noel Wilson with John Hardy and Don Shand. Second came a Papamoa team followed by the Omanu team of Gary Andrews, Sue Pepper & Pat Andrews.

29/07/11 - The committee decided to hold a Mid-Winter Xmas Dinner, there was a good response and 60 attended. The evening started with happy hour between 5-30pm & 6-30pm. The meal consisted of hot ham, chicken with roast vegetables, kumera, pumpkin, potatoes with mixed peas, beans, carrots, corn and gravy. Sweets were pavalova, fruit salad, jellies, xmas mince pies, cream & ice-cream. The room looked very festive with the xmas tree up and xmas serviettes. Tables were set up with six at each, our red tablecloths adding to the atmosphere. The committee and their partners did all the cooking and all the work. On behalf of all members, we say a big thankyou to them all. The evening was most enjoyable andy successful. Thank you once again President Tom, the Executive and your partners.

27/07/11 - Unfortunately, due to wet weather, the first two Winter Tournaments had to be cancelled though both had a full green of entries. Our third one was held today with a full green and a fine day. Eight teams emerged with 3 wins each, coming in 1st was a Mount team. Second was Omanu with Graham Caie, Ray & Pauline Bailey. Coming third was Omanu's Lance Orsler, Josephine Connolly & Ted Barker. Our fourth and final Winter Tournament is on Wednesday 10th August.

04/07/11 - Winter renovations have been completed and the greens are looking great. Roll-ups will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays starting at 1.00pm (weather permitting). Please note though that on the next couple of Wednesdays there are Open Tournaments so the greens will not be available for roll-ups.

27/05/11 - For the first time in some years all major executive positions were filled as listed in the Officers page. After some debate about the club shirt the reccommendation was that a new shirt be investigated for next season. Subs are to be the same as last year other than no early payment discount on the full sub of $190.00.

The thorny question of roll up fees raised lots of heat but little light. The majority of the club felt that no increase was warranted, despite another annual loss approaching $20,000 and 21 less members to pay the bills. The only battle won by the 'balance-the-budgeters' was to increase the fees for off-season activities, indoor bowls etc, from $3 to $4. We must all hope that Santa comes early with a big sack of loot!

14/05/11 - Having just received the Annual Report and invitation to this year's AGM, I was rapt to see that there are nominations for all positions on the Executive. Congratulations to all those good folk who have been running around cajoling, convincing and in some cases twisting arms to achieve this. All it needs now for everyone of us to attend the AGM and contribute to the Club's future.

Gee, it comes round fast, the "autumn clearances" have taken place again! Have a look at the Archives for some interesting reading.

09/05/11 - Mt Maunganui Bowling Club recently held a raffle for a set of bowls sponsored by Drake's Pride, in support of the Christchurch Earthquake Funds. This has now been drawn and the winning ticket was number 1157 won by Dave Harmon, a Mount Maunganui twilight bowler. The club decided that the funds should be used in support of Christchurch bowlers, and around $3,500 has been forwarded to the Canterbury Bowling Centre. They have been requested to share the amount between Christchurch clubs who have been affected by the earthquake. The organisers have expressed their thanks to the Omanu bowlers who gave their support to the raffle.
